STI Advisory Board Member Gail Gastelu Reports on Ceylon Tea, Part 1

If you are not already aware, 2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of Ceylon Tea! I’ve just returned from the most amazing, once in a lifetime experience, trip to Sri Lanka and will be working over the next weeks and months to help consumers and businesses to better understand Ceylon tea, its seasons for plucking year-round, and distinctive characteristics thanks to seven growing regions.

Since most members of the Tea Association of the USA’s Specialty Tea Institute are already in business, your best bet for connecting personally with Sri Lankan tea businesses would be by visiting trade shows and looking for exhibitors who are collectively a part/members of the Sri Lanka Tea Board. Short term, look for them at the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas, NV and Fancy Food Show in New York City this June, 2017. Most exhibitors will offer a taste of their teas. Don’t be shy…they all speak great English! Engage in conversation, ask questions, taste, explore, learn, and enjoy.

If you watch my kick-off interview with the chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, here, you will learn a little about the regions and how to pronounce them and hear about their vision for growth in the USA through businesses like yours! Stay tuned for more. . . as more of their 150th Anniversary plans are finalized, I will fill you in on some exciting programs and/or functions to attend near and far.  You might also consider traveling to Sri Lanka yourself to further explore the wonders of Ceylon tea.

To follow along in greater detail, please visit my personal blog here: http://gail.theteahousetimes.com and The Tea House Times’ new dedicated blog for more educational posts here: http://srilanka.theteahousetimes.com  Stay tuned for more! And at some point, I will come to the Tea Assoc. office in NY to tell you all about my trip in person during one of their 1:00 pm free tea sessions (members only!).
